The Depot Signs

The modern sign, designed to look historic, standing up for the first time in 2011. Positioned front and center of a historic train depot in Alamosa, Colorado.

This project started my dream job as a sign shop owner. I was a graphic designer for the Tourism Board in Alamosa, Colorado who owned the historic train depot. They had recently remodeled and restored the depot as a city “Gateway Center” and needed signage and logo for the property. I had dabbled in drafting and architectural design and dug right in.

Upon finding the original designs for the depot I immediately began taking design cues and implementing them into the new sign designs. All of the signs are carved from HDU sign foam and painted with durable outdoor sign enamel. The structures are welded steel and powder coated for long lasting durability.

After sending out my design plans for bid, a smaller sign company really stood out for their attention to construction details, the price, and the fact that they were local.

I had quite a bit of construction experience through working with my father-in-law for 15 years building log homes and working in the commercial trades as a finish carpenter for over 5 years. I took a HUGE interest in working alongside this sign shop. So much so, I ended up purchasing the company a year later.

The finished project was completed back in 2011 and today, it looks just as good.

It was also featured in SignCraft Magazine back in April, 2020!
